First, make sure the injury has been assessed appropriately
A twisted ankle is not automatically a straightforward sprain. Get urgent medical advice if pain or swelling is severe or worsening, or you cannot bear weight or walk more than a few steps. A visibly misshapen injury, numbness, or a cold or discoloured foot requires emergency assessment.
If you have already received medical advice, follow it and bring it to your physiotherapy appointment. Tell reception when the injury occurred and whether you have had imaging or been given restrictions.
Explain what returning to activity means for you
Walking around the house, standing through a shift and playing a sport place different demands on your day. Make a short list of the activities you need to return to, with the most important first.
For work, describe standing time, stairs, footwear and any lifting or uneven surfaces. For sport, name the activity and the movements involved. A clinician can discuss your situation more usefully with these details than with a request to be “back to normal” by a particular date.
Bring your injury and recovery history
Write down how the injury happened, what you could do immediately afterwards and what has changed since then. Mention previous ankle injuries and any sense of instability. Bring any support or brace you were advised to use and explain the instructions you received.
Keep a simple note of current limits during necessary activities. If something has become more painful or swollen, report that rather than pushing through a task to complete a self-test. Your appointment does not require you to prove you can run or jump.
Questions about your next activity step
Ask what needs to improve before progressing and how that will be assessed. Discuss walking and work separately from running or sport. Ask for clear advice on what to do if symptoms increase during an activity or afterwards.
If rehabilitation exercises are recommended, request instructions you can refer to at home. Ask how they fit into your schedule and when the plan should be reviewed. This article does not provide a universal exercise sequence or a test that clears you for competition.
Why a fixed recovery date is not a useful promise
Sprain severity and recovery vary; more severe injuries can take much longer to settle. Physiotherapy may help when recovery is taking longer than expected. A date in a general article cannot establish your readiness for a demanding activity.
Instead, ask for a plan with review points. Clarify who to contact if you are not progressing or if the injury worsens. The aim is to make your next decision with information about your own ankle and the activity you want to do.
